Grateful we were allowed to bring in coolers because the concessions, especially the DipnDots were just as dirty as pretty much everything else we encountered. I'm not a total prude and completely understand they're seeing thousands of people a day but it just didn't seem like any type of cleaning was a priority. No privacy curtains in their changing area and the whole restroom facility was filthy. The bathroom stalls were mostly broken, either the toilet paper dispensers were broken or the door latches. Trash all around the lazy rivers that you can tell had been there for awhile. Chapstick, shoe, wrappers floating in kiddie pool. There was a buildup of trash pretty much anywhere you looked and the entire time we were here, we didn't see any grounds keeper or custodial crew. The attractions for toddlers are nice and life guards very attentive. I would come back again for a day trip that’s about it.įirst time here as a family. The park satisfied my thirst for nature and beautiful scenery. Overall, this park was a nice day visit for me. Please be careful as the park takes you into Gary and some places are not safe. The beaches were clean and the water was clear too. The hikes were challenging and also prepare for sand everywhere. However, I thought the views of human pollution and human industry took away from some of the delight (there was a steel mill and coal smoke stack visible all times). I would say this park offers amazing views of unique ecosystems and nature. West Beach allows views of the Chicago skyline. After dinner head back in to one of the beaches to witness the sunset. The city offers so many food options and you can see the lighthouse there. Around dinner time I would stop in Michigan City, which is about ten minutes outside the park. Then I would continue down the highway/shore and stop at every significant location marked. (I got lost at first and I believe if I didn’t get a map the park would’ve been mediocre.)After that, I would head to West Beach and explore the dunes etc. I would recommend stopping at the visitor center and grabbing a map and a pass $25. I decided to go here because of the close proximity to Chicago and because it’s another national park off the list. Sign says you can picnic in the designated picnic area only by the parking area. Signs show No Grilling, parties, Picnics, fishing, feeding ducks, biking, or going in the water around the lake area.

So if you come here go bathroom before coming. The trail does seem to have houses around, so part of the trail is not all nature.īathrooms: Yes, only saw signs that they are in nature center but was close due to an event. It was pretty icy but my friend made it without them on. I do recommend getting some snow cleats or spikes for your boots/shoes if you want to hike in winter when there is snow/ice on the ground. The water fall on the hill made me feel like I went to a different state lol. They had a lake, an active Channel and a small waterfall. I really enjoyed the bodies of water in this hike.

I am plus hiker so if your plus and want to start hiking. It's a Mile around the lake its beginner friendly and they have plenty benches for anyone that needs to sit/rest or take in the view along the trail.
